Pulau Perhentian

21 kilometres off the coast of Terengganu lies the pearly white shores of Pulau Perhentian, which is Malay for "Island Stopover". And stopover you should, if you fancy its peaceful island atmosphere amidst the lapping crystal waters and lush tropical greenery. Feel the fine powdery sand softly yielding to your weight as you stroll along the beach. Take a midday dip into the sea and be embraced by soothing warm currents - home to a wide variety of marine life. Feast your eyes on the riot of ever-changing island colours. Who among us might not be calmed by layers of blue, green and turquoise in the waters? The best of Perhentian is nature’s poetry in colours, in movement and in shapes.

Clear water in Perhentian Island

Perhentian Islands consist of two companion islands, the larger being Pulau Perhentian Besar and the smaller Pulau Perhentian Kecil.

My journey to Perhentian is of worthy mention in that the speed boat journey fulfilled my juvenile inclinations for cheap thrills. It had been 9 months since I last took a speed boat so the high-speed ferry to the islands was in itself a treat. It was a rush to feel the forward propulsion and the wind pulling at my hair. As the speed boat cut across the brilliant blue sea, leaving a white foamy trail behind us, I kept hearing the Mission Impossible soundtrack in my head. Yes, I guess I had been cooped up in my office for too long.
